In 2016 we were able to invest in a Horsch zero till drill and GPS system with the help of funding from Real Devon through the Leader Grant Scheme. The funding came from The European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development to help boost productivity on farms. The project is restoring and improving soils across our farms and reducing the amount of inputs applied.

In 1999 E & J Greed, the parent company of Fortescue Farming, started trading over Fortescue and Rewe Barton Farms, Devon. Both mixed holdings are split between arable land and river meadows, combining to 230 Ha in total. A small herd of pedigree Blonde D'Aquitaine cattle were inherited and the introduction of South Devon cows from a dairy herd saw numbers increase steadily. The two breeds were cross-bred to create a commercial herd alongside the existing pedigree cattle.

In 2000 the farm buildings at Rewe Barton were sold for development, resulting in the land being farmed from one holding. Four years later in 2004, the partners of E & J Greed were given the opportunity to purchase Fortescue Farm from long standing landlords. Since then the farm has seen investment in infrastructure for both the beef and arable enterprises and is well placed to meet the future demands of the industry.

In 2007, Jilly Greed, one of the founding partners of the business, was named a finalist for the Farmers Weekly Beef Farmer of the Year award. She was also named as the NFU Farming Champion of the Year in recognition of the work she had done for the South West Beef industry. Jilly is also a co-founder of Ladies In Beef with Minette Batters, aiming to raise the profile of female beef farmers all over the UK. In 2010, the farm featured in a BBC programme called The Private Life of Cows, presented by Jimmy Doherty. The programme looked at the intelligence of cows and hierarchy between individuals within the herd.

In 2012 George Greed completed a BSC (Hons) degree in Agricultural Business Management at the University of Reading, attaining a 2:1. Following graduation he returned to the farm and was made a partner in the business.

Since then the farm has increased its arable area and has reinvested heavily into buildings, machinery and a 50 Kw solar scheme mounted along side and on the grain store roof. Fortescue Farming is now expanding its arable enterprise through contract farming agreements.
